Tips for buying your perfect cello

Why Used Cellos Are Often a Better Investment

Unlike many other purchases, buying a used cello can be a wise decision.

Here’s why:

  • Playability: A used cello has usually undergone professional setup, meaning string height, fingerboard condition, neck width, and essential hardware like the tailpiece and endpin are likely in good playing condition.
  • Proven Quality: Some of the finest cellos in the world—prized instruments that are over 300 years old—are used cellos. They hold incredible value and produce unmatched sound quality.
  • Avoiding Additional Costs: Many new cellos, especially those bought online, come in raw form and require extensive setup, which can add several hundred dollars to your purchase.

What About New Cellos?
New cellos can also be a great option, especially because they evolve alongside your playing style. Over time, the cello adapts to your sound, intonation, and even how your fingers meet the fingerboard. This can create a uniquely personalized instrument. A used cello will eventually adapt to your playing style as well, but with a new cello, you’re building it from scratch.

Remote Cello
For students in remote areas without access to local luthiers, online marketplaces can provide options for both new and used cellos. While some students have had success with new instruments from Amazon, other platforms offer good choices for high-quality used cellos.
